Every year whale sharks gather in the calm, plankton-rich waters off Kilindoni, making Mafia Island one of the best places in East Africa to swim with them.
We head out by boat with an experienced local spotter. When a whale shark is found, you slip into the water with mask and snorkel and swim alongside it. Encounters are calm and respectful: no touching, no chasing, small groups in the water at a time.
You don't need to be a strong swimmer — life jackets are available and the guide is in the water with you.

Whale sharks are usually seen off Kilindoni from around October to March. Sightings depend on nature, so message us for the latest conditions before you book.
Do I need to be a strong swimmer?
No. You snorkel at the surface, life jackets are available, and a guide is in the water with you.
Is it safe to swim with whale sharks?
Yes. Whale sharks are filter feeders that eat plankton. We follow a respectful code: keep your distance, never touch, and only a few people in the water at a time.
Where does the trip start?
Trips leave from Kilindoni, on the west side of Mafia Island. We can add a pickup from your hotel in Kilindoni or Utende.
