Mafia Island Itinerary: 3, 5 and 7 Days
Day-by-day plans for 3, 5 or 7 days on Mafia Island — whale sharks, Chole Bay snorkelling, Juani lagoon, sandbanks and sunset dhows.
Mafia Island is small, but there is a lot to fit in: whale sharks off Kilindoni, the reefs of Chole Bay, the ruins and lagoon on Juani, sandbank picnics and slow sunsets on a dhow. These plans are built around how the island really works — tides, boat times and the short distances between Kilindoni and Utende — so you spend your time in the water, not waiting.
How many days do you need?
- 3 days: enough for whale sharks (in season), one marine park trip and a sunset
- 5 days: the sweet spot — whale sharks, snorkelling or diving, Chole and Juani, a sandbank day
- 7 days or more: time to slow down, dive more, go fishing or add a village and culture day
Arrival day rarely counts as a full day. Most flights land at Mafia airstrip in Kilindoni, and the drive to the Utende side takes around half an hour.
Mafia Island in 3 days
- Day 1: Arrive, transfer to your hotel and settle in. In the late afternoon, take a dhow sunset cruise on Chole Bay.
- Day 2: Morning whale shark swimming off Kilindoni (October to March). Afternoon at the beach or a short snorkel.
- Day 3: Snorkelling in Mafia Island Marine Park, then your transfer back to the airstrip.
Outside whale shark season, swap day 2 for a full day on the sandbank or a Chole Island tour.
Mafia Island in 5 days
- Day 1: Arrival and sunset by the water.
- Day 2: Whale shark swimming in the morning, rest in the afternoon.
- Day 3: Snorkelling or diving in Chole Bay inside the marine park.
- Day 4: Chole Island in the morning (ruins, fruit bats, village), Juani Island and the Kua ruins in the afternoon — or the Juani lagoon when the tide is right.
- Day 5: Sandbank picnic and snorkel with fresh grilled fish, then fly out the next morning or in the late afternoon.
Mafia Island in 7 days
Follow the 5-day plan, then add:
- Day 6: A fishing trip with local fishermen, or a second day of diving at Kinasi Pass for certified divers.
- Day 7: The Mafia Island full-day tour by road — villages, baobabs and the quiet north of the island — or a village and culture tour around Kilindoni market and harbour.
Plan around the season
- October to March: whale shark season, calm seas and the clearest water for snorkelling.
- July to October: humpback whales may pass Mafia on their migration.
- Turtle hatching depends on the nests each year, so ask us before you travel.
- April and May are the long rains; some boat trips pause or depend on the weather.
See our month-by-month calendar for the details, then send us your dates and we will build the days around the tides and boat times.
Getting around between trips
Distances are short and roads are simple. We arrange car transfers, bajaji rides and boats between Kilindoni, Utende and Chole, so you do not need to hire a car.
Frequently asked questions
How many days should I spend on Mafia Island?
Five days is ideal: enough for whale sharks, the marine park, Chole and Juani and a sandbank day without rushing. Three days works if your time is short.
Can I do whale sharks and snorkelling on the same day?
Yes. Whale shark trips run in the morning and are usually back by midday, leaving the afternoon free for the beach or a short snorkel.
Is Mafia Island good for a short trip from Dar es Salaam?
Yes. The flight from Dar es Salaam is short, so even a long weekend on Mafia is worthwhile.
