Whale Shark Season on Mafia Island
When and where to swim with whale sharks on Mafia Island, what to expect, and how to choose a responsible trip.
Mafia Island is one of the best places in East Africa to swim with whale sharks. They gather in the plankton-rich water off Kilindoni, on the west side of the island.
When is the season?
Whale sharks are usually seen from around October to March. The busiest months for visitors are often November to February. Exact timing changes a little every year, so ask us for the latest sightings before you travel.
Where do you see them?
Trips leave from Kilindoni. The whale sharks feed close to the coast, so boat rides are usually short.
What to expect
A spotter looks for whale sharks from the boat. When one is found, you slip into the water with a mask and snorkel and swim alongside it at the surface. Encounters are calm and quiet.
Swim responsibly
- Keep a few metres away from the whale shark
- Never touch, chase or block its path
- Only a few swimmers in the water at a time
- No flash photography
Who can join?
Anyone comfortable in the water with a snorkel. You do not need to be a strong swimmer — life jackets are available and a guide swims with you.
