Mafia Island Beaches and Sandbanks
Where to swim and relax on Mafia Island: Utende and Chole Bay, the tidal reef, and sandbanks such as Marimbani — plus how tides change everything.
Mafia Island is not a long strip of resort beaches like parts of Zanzibar. Its magic is in the bays, the coral reefs close to shore and the white sandbanks that appear in the open sea at low tide. Knowing where to go — and when — makes all the difference.
Utende and Chole Bay
Utende, on the south-east coast, faces the calm, sheltered water of Chole Bay inside Mafia Island Marine Park. This is where most visitors stay. The water is warm and gentle, good for a swim at high tide, and boats leave from here for snorkelling, diving, Chole Island and Juani.
At low tide the water in front of Utende pulls back a long way. That is the moment to walk the tidal reef with a guide and see starfish, sea cucumbers, cowries and small fish in the pools.
Sandbanks
Sandbanks are the highlight for many visitors: bright white sand surrounded by turquoise water, with nothing but the sea around you. Marimbani is one of the best known, and there are others depending on the tide. A typical sandbank day includes:
- A boat ride across the bay
- Swimming and snorkelling around the sandbank
- Fresh fish grilled on the sand for lunch
- Shade, water and time to do nothing at all
Sandbanks appear and disappear with the tide, so we plan the day around the tide tables.
Juani lagoon
On Juani Island, a hidden tidal lagoon surrounded by mangroves fills with clear water. Swimming here is only possible at certain points of the tide, which is why we combine it with the Kua ruins and time the trip carefully.
Kilindoni side
Kilindoni, the main town, is on the west coast. It is a working harbour rather than a swimming beach, but it is the base for whale shark trips, because the whale sharks feed off this coast between October and March. Sunsets over the water here are excellent.
Tips for beach days
- Check the tide: the same beach can look completely different at high and low tide
- Wear reef shoes for walking on the tidal reef
- Bring reef-safe sunscreen and cover up in the midday sun
- Dress modestly away from the beach and hotels — Mafia is a traditional, mostly Muslim island
- Take your rubbish home; sandbanks have no bins
Frequently asked questions
Does Mafia Island have good beaches?
Yes, but in a different way from Zanzibar. The best swimming is in Chole Bay at high tide and on the sandbanks offshore, which you reach by boat.
What is the best sandbank on Mafia Island?
Marimbani is one of the best known. Which sandbank we visit depends on the tide that day.
Can you swim at low tide on Mafia Island?
In Chole Bay the water goes out a long way at low tide, which is perfect for reef walking. For swimming, go at high tide or take a boat to a sandbank.
