Dar es Salaam to Mafia by Road and Boat (Nyamisati Route)
A step-by-step guide to the budget route from Dar es Salaam to Mafia Island via Nyamisati port.
The road-and-boat route is the cheapest way to reach Mafia Island and an adventure in itself.
Step 1: Dar es Salaam to Nyamisati
Nyamisati is a small port on the Rufiji delta, about 4–5 hours by road south of Dar es Salaam. Leave early so you arrive in time for the boat.
Step 2: Nyamisati to Kilindoni
The boat crossing to Kilindoni takes about 3–4 hours. Departure times change with the tides, so always confirm the schedule a day before.
Step 3: Arrival in Kilindoni
Boats arrive at Kilindoni port. From there it's a few minutes to hotels in town, or about 30 minutes to Utende.
